The Strategy of
Dishwashing
It was an ordinary
day for Emine. The sun was getting brighter each minute. The morning light in
her kitchen was calming. She opened the window a little, letting in the fresh
spring air in. She had sent the children to school and was standing behind the
counter, which was her main working place. “Now, where to start?” she
thought. She looked at the plates and picked them up. “They don't look too
dirty, I'd better wash them by hand.” As she ran her hands over the plate,
she realized that it was more greasy than she expected. First she thought, “Should
I even bother?” but she persisted “No, it will be clean with a little
more effort”. She turned on the hot water and got rid of the grease, even
though it was a little difficult. It turned out that the plates she thought
were clean were not.
As she finished her
chores and sat in her armchair, she started to think. “One's life is just
like these plates. Sometimes we want our problems to be solved and handled
immediately. We take it too lightly, thinking we can solve them easily.”
Like the grease on
the plate, we have all kinds of problems in our lives. Sometimes something we
consider insignificant can actually be the source of the problem. And sometimes
the things we see as crucial can turn out to be only distractions. So how do we
know whether our problems are important or not? Our life is not simple as
washing a plate where we can turn on the boiling water when it gets a little
greasy.
Delicate Reflection
How can we solve
the problems we face in our lives, like cleaning the dishes? To distinguish
between the truth and false in a matter, we need to examine and delicately
reflect upon our life. But human beings like to live this life casually. Most
of the time, we prefer to stay in our comfort zone. We make excuses. We say we
don’t want to be bothered or that it is what it is. It is the easy way to live
as we learned from our mothers and ancestors. The difficult thing is to
delicately reflect upon life and put what we know into practice.
Because in order to
believe and be convinced of an information one needs to collect evidence from
life itself. Human beings think they know a lot about many things, but they
fall behind when it comes to practice.
The Experiential Design Teaching says that
people assume they know what they hear. However, life responds to what we do
rather than what we know.
If we turn to
someone on the street and ask; “What will become of this country?” everyone
would have an answer, an opinion on how a country should be governed. But most
people have problems when it comes to managing the people in their house. It seems like this is not the truth of the
matter… Then what is it?
The truth is…
The truth is that
our eyes can not see themselves. We can see everyone else, but we can't see
ourselves. Everyone else can see us, but
they can't see themselves. So what is it that we need? How do we get the real
knowledge that will enable us to see ourselves through a third eye?
How does one free
oneself of one's delusions? Our lives are like greasy plates that seem clean at
first glance. Can we see the grease that everyone sees but we don't care much
about? When will we start doing the things we know? When will we stop thinking
that the plates aren't that dirty and take the risk to fight with real grease?
Are you ready?
Human beings move
closer to the truth when they can accept their mistakes, their grease, their
dirt. Only when we admit our mistakes can we feel remorse. When we are ashamed
and regretful of our grease and dirt we begin to purify and clean ourselves. It
all begins when we ask ourselves this question; “So what can I do?”
Every person who
adds behavior to knowledge will eventually be cleansed of their dirt. As long
as we don’t delay or give up and be sincere in the process… We all have grease
and dirt on our plates. The point is not to make it dirty but to clean it.
Do you have the
courage? I'm turning on the hot water, are you ready?
