A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY

Ahmet set out on this path thinking "Small but steady wins the race”. Since the pandemic, he had become interested in the car trading business. At first, he couldn’t make much profit out of it. As time passed and as he persevered, things started to improve for him. He was selling a maximum of two cars a year, but the vehicles he bought were giving him better profits than he had anticipated. This way, his money was also flourishing. Within his circle of friends this profit only made Ahmet.. His friends, on the other hand, had invested in ventures that they thought would yield big profits in a short time. They had invested with everything they had. When Ahmet started trading they had also started some business.

"Are you mad you can’t grow your business this small? How can you expect to make money like that? Look at us, we invest once and get five times back," they would say. Ahmet could never understand this easy-money approach his friends were talking about. To him, this method seemed too complicated. Even if it wasn’t complicated, it wouldn’t sit well with him… Because his father had never raised him that way; "Any profit must always have the sweat of labor in it," he used to say.

Mr. Sadık was a car mechanic. He didn’t make much money. He would leave for work early in the morning and come home after dark. He never complained about his job or his life. In fact, he would often say to his wife, "I’d get sick if I don’t work.”

His mother would sometimes grumble, "You’ll get sick from working too much!"

"A rolling stone gathers no moss…" Ahmet had heard his father say this many times. So, he worked hard and never complained. He knew that nothing worth having comes easy.

When the family gathered, there was no dull moment. They didn’t have many resources or entertainment, but they always managed to make each other smile. His father never brought work home. Yes, he worked hard, but he made sure not to neglect his family. Every day when he came home, he would spend time with his wife and children. On Sundays, he would close his shop and take the children out for a trip, picnic, or shopping. They would spend wonderful time together. People in the neighborhood admired the bond they shared.

"Now that I think about it, my father didn’t make much money, but we lacked nothing" he thought to himself. He was looking at his friends, who had recommended fast and easy ways of making money, and he was beginning to understand his fathers’ words. His friends were constantly on their phones, living from one "I lost profit!" or "I made money!" moment to the next. Some of them had even set alarms on their phones, waking up every hour to check the site for updates. They couldn’t even lay their heads on the pillow comfortably.

Forget about spending time with their spouses and children; there were people who were afraid to even leave their computers to go to the bathroom. He couldn’t understand how they could handle such an overexcited life. Since their stress levels were so high, they couldn’t focus on their lives. Yes, they were earning well, but the money didn’t truly have an impact on their life. They couldn’t make their wives or children happy with small gestures anymore. As their money increased, their family’s expenses also increased. Their satisfaction levels were always decreasing. Some of them would brag about the amount of their earnings but this money would be circulating on these sites. There were people who couldn’t buy anything for their homes with even a single penny and had to ask their wives for money.

Ahmet, on the other hand, had been buying and selling cars with cash since the pandemic. He had made a lot of profit from the cars he bought. He would take his family and friends on trips. He would bring local treats from his hometown. Load up his car with olives, dried foods, and whatever else he could find. Sometimes he would even sleep in his car while on vacation. He was both using his cars and making profit out of them. These profits weren’t huge, but with each transaction, he was able to afford slightly better cars.

Ahmet had heard a saying from his father that he never forgot: "Better a little with peace of mind than a lot with trouble, a little goes a long way". Yes, Ahmet’s father didn’t make much money, but he always enjoyed the benefits of his earnings. Ahmet, like his father, was benefiting from his hard earned money as well. Although not very large, he had managed to buy a small house. He had a middle-class car. He was able to send his children to universities outside the city. He always kept his father’s words close to his heart.
